Haifa’s Bahai Shrine unveils glittering new golden dome

After more than two years of extensive restoration work, Haifa's golden-domed Baha'i Shrine was recently unveiled in its resplendent glory, revealing almost 12,000 new, gilded tiles.  The project required the restoration and conservation of the interior and exterior of the original 1909 structure, as well as measures to strengthen the Shrine against earthquakes. New tiles in more than 120 different shapes and sizes were manufactured from pure porcelain, covered with layers of glazing and gold solution, and finished with a highly durable final coating.

With over half a million visitors a year, the Bahá’í Gardens in Haifa and Akko are among the most popular tourist sites in Israel. Their unique design, combining geometrical shapes and exquisite detailing, leaves an indelible impression on visitors. Many return again and again to experience the changing seasons and relive the serene tranquility and uplifting spirit of these special places.

Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2008, the Bahá’í Gardens in Haifa and Akko have been recognized for their “outstanding universal value” as holy places and places of pilgrimage for the followers of the Bahá’í Faith. Visitors may enjoy the stunning beauty of these gardens by visiting the open public areas, joining a walk-in tour or arranging a guided visit for large groups.
